Lies of P Review: A Unique Pinocchio-Inspired Soulslike with Stunning Bosses and Frustrating Flaws

Mr. Fore

Lies of P throws you into a uniquely crafted world with a common Soul style, but its setting and character upgrades are truly where Lies of P shines.

Pinocchio Meets Sci-Fi in a Dark European Fantasy

18th—to 19th-century European dolls and robots—a unique setting inspired by Carlo Collodi's 1883 novel, The Adventures of Pinocchio, the game created super-unique bosses and story-telling opportunities from classic Sci-fi and medieval genres. Lies of P doubles down on its setting and offers truly unique customization and progression.

Lies of P Bosses' Held Back by Frustrating Mechanics

The abilities and durability are a pretty cool system to introduce into the game and it fits well. As you progress through the game the boss designs get even better, many of them are very impressive.

As I played more, point by point, I knocked the game down because its flaws began to show. The ridiculously bad parkour, the insane distances between respawns, and the stamina-reliant combat made them inferior to the combat of other Souls games. Tedium is never a good game design. The jumping mechanics are horrible. How this got past QA is beyond me. The hitbox issues become very glaring in larger fights with bigger bosses, or more enemies.

There were many areas where the game began to look cheap, mainly in the animation. Characters wouldn't animate into the next animation, but would abruptly stop and play the second animation, which made it feel very choppy. The voice acting too for some of the characters was not great,

Conclusion

Beyond the flaws, it does have some very satisfying boss fighting and intriguing story elements. Level XI was well thought out from a map gameplay side. The way the maps all connect around each other are done in a very high-quality manner, similar to and sometimes exceeding that of Elden Ring.
