DOOM: The Dark Ages hits the ground running with an epic opening that sets the tone for a phenomenal experience. Right from the start, the game feels fluid and immersive, pulling you into a war-torn, demon-besieged world with medieval aesthetics that frame a pre-modern DOOM Slayer.

Gameplay and World Design

The gameplay is hands-down some of the best ever. It's fluid, intense, and unmatched in how it makes you feel. The environmental design is breathtaking, with huge vistas and beautiful scenes that fully immerse you in the action. The soundtrack is equally epic, although I feel like it was inferior to Eternal Music.

New Additions to DOOM

New mechanics like mech fighting brought a fresh twist, playing similarly to Wukong’s giant fights with dodging and parrying. While mechs feel less fluid than the FPS segments (likely intentional to make the player feel their weight), they’re still epic. The dragon-riding is a cool addition as well, adding more variety to what a DOOM game is. Puzzles are fun and balanced, not too challenging but engaging. The story takes unexpected turns, keeping you invested, though it’s not groundbreaking. Compared to DOOM Eternal (which I rated 9/10 for lacking innovation), DOOM: The Dark Ages delivers the innovation the series needed in 2025, whith its gameplay and a good satisfying ending.

Enemy Variety

Across its 22 lengthy chapters, DOOM: The Dark Ages keeps combat engaging with a great amount of enemy variety. Each enemy type demands unique strategies, ensuring battles never feel repetitive. The game is parry heavy, but each combo of the bosses is different. Each of the 22 chapters has challenging enemies with pretty creative mechanics.

DOOM The Dark Ages Review Conclusion

DOOM: The Dark Ages is a triumph, blending innovation with the series’ signature chaos. It’s a must-play for fans and newcomers alike, offering countless hours of demon-slaying glory.
